Oromandibular Dystonia

Uncontrolled movements of the lower jaw or tongue characterize this disorder.  Pain is often associated with it because of the muscle tightness.  It is frequently misdiagnosed as a TMJ disorder.  This disorder can be painful and very debilitating due to its effects on talking, eating and appearance.  Our clinic has found Botulinum toxin therapy to be the effective treatment for this disorder and is one of the few clinics in the country to provide treatment for this disorder.  The precise etiology of this disorder is not well known but involves the trigeminal motor nerve.  It is similar to cervical dystonia and can occur together with Oromandibular Dystonia.
